Kowalski on WGHN: Dizon 'nowhere close to starting'

    by Philip Zaroo | MLive
    Monday August 25, 2008, 4:11 PM

There was a lot of skepticism when the Detroit Lions used their second-round draft pick to take Jordon Dizon. And while it wouldn't be fair to say Dizon has been a disappointment – after all, we're only talking about the preseason – MLive Lions Insider Tom Kowalski doesn't see the rookie making any noise anytime soon.

He tells Ryan Terpstra, of WGHN-AM Grand Haven, that not only does Dizon have a long ways to go to push Paris Lenon for the starting middle linebacker position; he has yet to unseat Buster Davis as backup MLB.

"Jordon Dizon is not going to be a factor anytime soon," Kowalski says, "unless something's going on that I'm not aware of.

"It's not a surprise. If you remember, there's been a deal between (Rod) Marinelli and (Matt) Millen, going back to before the draft, where Marinelli said he would have a reluctance to play a rookie middle linebacker ... because that (position) is so complex.

"Clearly, Marinelli's winning out on this argument because Dizon is nowhere close to starting."

boooo! Start him anyways! Thats what we always do!

Another Lions bust. Especially if the get production from fluellen, Avril etc

Posted by uferfan on 08/25/08 at 5:14PM

I have no problem with this. They say MLB is the QB of the defense. If so, bringing him along slowly, and letting him learn to play the position the right way, is probably the way to go. Especially, if their current MLB is adequate. From what I have seen this preseason, the defense is pretty solid. If the offense is anywhere near as explosive as they seem capable of, the defense doesn't need to be perfect anyway. I say let Dizon learn, and build confidence, and start him when he's ready.

I am not sure why this is such a surprize, I said it months ago that Dizon wouldn't start. not because he is a wasted pick but that's Marlnelli, the only reason Smith is starting is because he is head and shoulders above everybody else.

think about it he did this with E. Sims in his rookie year. Sims didn't start. Marnelli has allways said that rookies have to earn that starting spot not just have it handed to them. GO LIONS TRADE FOR LITO............

Why is my Fantasy League telling me Cason obtained a ankle injury and Tom has yet to tell anyone about it?

Goes to show you anything you should talk serious about what Tom says...the guy don't even know how to report that the game was going to be delayed 2 and half hours.

Posted by Probullers on 08/25/08 at 5:16PM

    Sean McHugh, TE DET
News: The Sports Xchange reports that Lions TE/FB Sean McHugh injured his ankle in a win over the Browns on Saturday.
Analysis: McHugh is the backup FB in Detroit and has no Fantasy value.

Tom, What's with the agenda? You've been on this guy since day one. It is NOT uncommon for a team to draft a LB and then that player doesn't start until mid-season.

Yeah, I understadn your still arguing the Buster Davis is in front of him but that's a good thing, keeps Buster from getting cut.

I only have heard of Simonson from ESPN.

    Posted by pit78 on 08/25/08 at 5:55PM

    allright that does it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

1.cody shouldnt even be in the NFl period!

2.dan cambell is made of glass

3.dizon "IS A BUST" and is going to cost gregg blue his spot due to numbers.

4.raiola,backus should NOT be locks to make this team. and by this point gosder cherilus should be starting. ramirez should get the start over steven [pushover]peterman.

5.bullocks is being hailed as a prize safety when he hasnt even played in "20 straight months"

6.tatum bell is the backup running back when he CLEARLY sucks.

7.we have all these awsome WRs and "REFUSE" to trade one to better this team.

8.we drafted moore a KR/PR thats only had "2" opportunittys to return punts, and he'll be cut. we could've had ali highsmith!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

9.they wont run felton even though he had 69 touchdowns in college!

10.they cut good players like KR eddie drummond because he cant play two OR MORE positions, so we get stuck with aveon cason really sucks.

    11. we rufuse to play rookies because rod is convinced it takes forever to learn a position they've allready played for years and years.

12.they drafted ikiaka-alama-francis because he played volleybal, while dan bazuin was still on the board. bazuin had a higher sack total and was a local kid from central michigan.

    13. the fact that stanton got injured during a practice makes me sick!

14.the fact that redding was out last week and cody replaced him instead of langston moore makes me sick!

    15.paris lennon makes me sick!

i've had it!!! between the reasons i've listed and that stupid huge article telling us 3-0 means nothing, and the fact stan kwan is still here, and we have a naked coach, a dunder head for a GM that drafts bust after bust on a yearly basis..

the MLB spot has needed to be addressed for 3 frikin years, ever since rod took over and for whatever reaos millen just cant find "the guy"..

    what ever,,, i'm done!

and the sad thing is, is the fans know more ways to fix this team better than the GM does.

so until further notice,,,this is pittbull78 signing off!

    Chief,

    1) no where did Tom say he was a bust. We are getting vbery good output from Lenon and Davis, so there is no rush.

    2) How often have you found Tom to be right about anything he predicts? He just assured tus that Dizon will be named the starter tomorrow.

    Posted by Baloo92 on 08/25/08 at 6:16PM

    Click,

Wait until the kickoff against the falcons to ask that.

If I remember right Sims was not named starter until the week before the 1st game.

"Jordon Dizon is not going to be a factor anytime soon," Kowalski says, "unless something's going on that I'm not aware of."

Usually there is a lot that Tom isn't aware of...

    Posted by Grove1340 on 08/25/08 at 6:59PM

Dizon has made a few plays and is behind the learning curve, that doesn't make him an automatic bust. The running game will be a factor if they continue to pressure with it even when it doesn't net 3.4 yard per attempt, it is something the teams they play will have to watch for, and it will take it's toll on a defensive line, and opportunities will open up in the running game later. The offensive line is still a concern, but with a moving pocket (also something to tire out a defensive line) Kitna has not been throwing from the grasp of a sack every 3rd play. They are playing the game to the ability level they have available, as everyone complained they haven't done in the years past. They are changing the play based on the talents of the TEAM. Quit sniveling, and either stand up or play fair weather and hang your jerseys in the back of the closet another year!

This franchise is hilarious. Two straight years when the first two picks don't start on a pitiful football team. The Detroit Lions are the only NFL team that can come off two losing seasons and get NO STARTERS when the season kicksoff. It's just great to see how they can take "projects" like Francis, Stanton, Dizon in the second round. Great organizations take "projects" in rounds 4 or 5. Long live Russ Thomas...oh wait he still is living and has been reincarnated.

Posted by JChadwick on 08/26/08 at 8:45AM

The Lions are lucky again to start the season off with relatively easy games and an early bye week.

They'll have time to work out the zone blocking scheme against Atlanta and San Francisco, and Dizon might manage to get some valuable playing time in at the middle should the Lions build a lead in those games.

Posted by millersco on 08/26/08 at 3:13PM

Unbelieveable how knee jerk our reactions are. A rookie who has played some limited time in three pre-season games is a bust. I'm glad I don't work for any of you. Mario Williams was a bust too his rookie year, everyone in Texas wanted to crucify him. Lots of folks eating crow now. Players need time to develop - talent isn't micro-waveable in three minutes. Get real.

Pit (and everyone bashing the picks),

Wow, I wish I could have caught this yesterday but was way too busy. THe Dizon talk (and draft "busts") should be reigned in a bit. I was a bit giddy after reading up on this kids bio, and having seen a couple of games from last year but, to think ANY rookie just drops into the NFL with a starting position is crazy. Especially when it's a position like MLB. I believe that the coaching staff is allowing him to get some pt against the 3rd's so that he has a better chance of correcting if a mistake is made. Our 2nd and 3rd's have looked better than everyone else's 2nd and 3rd's, to include Dizon. He'll be better as the year goes by, even better going into next year and will be the starter next year. I was hoping he'd be dropped into the role but I am also glad our 1st and 2nd's have looked better than we expected (even if it's preseason). Hold out judgement till next year bro. Give him time to prove you wrong.
As for Cherilus, he's gonna take someones spot, it's just a matter of time. He's better than the guy's in front of him, it appears the oc isn't sure where he'll make a bigger impact.
I loved the rant tho, pit. I think you covered how all of us feel, looking through the way back machine. Lots of mistakes. At least it appears the saviour is correcting them.

    GO LIONS!
