Kowalski on WDFN: Stanton should be judged as other QBs ... by results
by Philip Zaroo | MLive
Wednesday August 20, 2008, 2:15 PM
Drew Stanton's made major progress in the space of a month. This much, Tom Kowalski has already said. But it's apparent beyond the field. In the locker room, the second-year quarterback is displaying more confidence than he's shown since he was drafted.
While detractors say Stanton's looked good against third-string defenses, the MLive Lions Insider points out that, whether it's through the air or using his legs, he's getting the job done.
"A lot of young quarterbacks use their legs when getting acclimated (to the NFL)," Kowalski tells WDFN's Sean Baligian on It Is What It Is, "and that's good. That's why (Matt) Millen drafted this kid – because he has that ability. He makes things happen.
"Now, if (Mike) Martz had still been here, (Stanton) would probably still look as bad as he did that first day. Because they would try to turn him into a drop-back passer – y'know, stand there, seven steps, take the hit, all that. He's not that kind of guy. He's the guy who gets out, makes things happen, even when he runs around. Martz never liked a guy like that.
"So it's kinda funny that the Lions drafted the wrong guy for Martz, but in the end, they probably ended up with the right guy."
Listen to the entire interview to hear which veteran Killer thinks is in danger of being cut without a couple of strong showings in the final two preseason games:

EXACTLY...
Best person wins in compeption. This even includes Kitna.
Hate to say it...but in a weird way, Stanton reminds me of a young Brett Favre...the way he scrambles, the "wobbly duck" passes (sometimes)...but they get to their target, etc...like Favre...Stanton just wants to get the ball going down field ANYWAY possible.
Not like Kitna...who seldom runs and takes a sack.
Another thing that DROVE ME UP THE WALL was Martz so called "genius" that he thought he knew better than the QB on how to pass the ball...even changing the physical characteristics of the QB passing.
For example...Stanton made it to the pro-level on his god-given athletic ability...as well as any other pro athlete. They do for 15+ years what is best to succeed IN THEIR BODY AND PHYSICAL MAKE-UP.
Here comes Martz...he tells Stanton..."No, No...you are throwing all wrong...throw out the 15+ years of what you have been doing to hit a moving target at 30 yards, and i'll show you what I THINK you should be doing...."
So Stanton listens to Martz...and REALLY sucks before he was injured...his mechanics he has used for 15+ years are all screwed up.
Martz gets fired...and guess what? Stanton is hitting his target again...going back to what made him a high school and college success.
Simple.
These so called coaches should teach philosophies and some mechanics...but they CANNOT expect to throw out what made each athlete successful in their OWN body...and expect them to be perfect with a whole new set of mechanics, when in some cases, their physical limitations will not allow them.
Martz truely was a DINK...he thought he knew better than anyone how they should throw the ball in their body...and Martz would not bend...his way or the highway...that is why Stanton was not in Martz's favor.
No...you are right...I should have stated better.
I am saying that in a pure sense...competition should be looked at neutrally...just because someone has been in there for a long time...does not necessarily mean there should not be change.
Just keep an open mind on a team and use the BEST player for that position.
At this point, yes...I think Kitna has the most experience and ability to lead over the other two QB's....but let's see how the other two work out during the season.
Hey...finally...I think we have 1 solid QB, and two SOLID backups...so I finally feel good (not great) about the QB's position that I haven't felt in a long time.
Comparing what we knew about Martz's offense to our new offense, I can see how this guy is an ego maniac. The fact that one of the most exciting things about these two preseason games has been Stanton running the ball and the idea that Martz would have discouraged or even prevented him from doing that is just another reason why we're better off without him.
I am an extreme optimist when it comes to the Lions (aka a slappy), so I never take any shots at Millen, but the idea that he drafted the wrong QB for his then offensive scheme, but this QB might work out perfectly for the new offense is pretty funny to me.
Also, I know people who are U of M fans might not like Stanton since he's from State, but what's giving me a hard time is that he went to high school at Farmington Hills Harrison. I hate the Hawks. Kinda funny, too.
GO LIONS
He not ready yet to play prime time. The Lions should groom him for 2009 season. He basically a rookie and you play rookie QB's it hirts them more than helps them.

GO LIONS
They knew Stanton would be around longer than Martz, that's why they drafted him.
Again Tom is trying to compare Gosder to Dizon, Gosder played both righ and left sides in college Dizon has only ever played Middle LB....Tom needs to stop trying to stir up something that doesn't exist.
Mogman
As a U of M diehard I can honestly say that I've always like Stanton. Besides maybe Troy Smith he's the only QB in the big ten that scared me on game day against michigan.
Like I said a few days ago he has that "IT" that makes him special. Not the prettiest passes but effective!
There was a play early in his series against the bengals were 2 defenders got right thru the line and he peeled off of them on a bootleg and ran at a very strange angle and dove 5 yrds for a 1st down. You can't teach those intangibles!
Go Blue but also Go Lions !
I think that Stanton should get time as the #2 qb for the next two preseason games. DanO had his chance now give Stanton his.
Clewi...
GREAT idea!
however, won't happen though...(I think).
Coaches tend to set in stone their "vision" of where players should be and if a position is working (QB appears to be), then they are less likely to make a change.
However, this goes back to what I said earlier...open competition is great, especially in preseason...so let's see how Stanton fares as #2.
What is strange is the caller asked about Buster Davis....and Tom never answered.
He rarely mentions Davis' play or any of the other LB's. Yet they have been the ones that have stood out this preseason. Leon Joe and Buster Davis have been putting the hat to some people. I even saw Alex Lewis in on a number of plays in the second preseason game.....
Plus he seems to be down on the LB position for some reason. So I have to wonder if the absence of that "big" name LB is the reason for this. No Spikes or Vilma....so the LB unit is not so good.
Can anyone name the LB's in Indy?? How about Chicago?? After Urlacher...who..Briggs...and his name is known because of his holdout. In Tampa during their run....You knew Derrick Brooks and then who were the other LB's???? Quarles...maybe...
I just think the unit has to play well as a whole...a big name is not needed. I think that is underestimated in my opinion...
There's two schools of thought.
You can follow the "just win baby" approach of Al Davis, which Stanton has arguably done in his limited time on the field. Thus far, he's outperforming Jamarcus Russell.
You can also argue that he's another Mike McMahon who, against milquetoast vanilla prevent defenses, looks like a wonder, but who knows how he would perform against a first string defense with disguises and blitzes.
Too early to say one way or the other.
Stanton has a lot of potential...I hope he can fulfill it all because we all need a QB to get behind. I just hope the UM people can put down their bias and give the kid a chance at least. Once they're done with college, they're done..He's in the NFL now, not at MSU so no need to hate any longer. Besides, you guys got the better of him, even when you shouldn't have...man, I hated that game and still have nightmares about it!
SoCal,
I was just making a generalization that it might be hard for U of M fans to cheer for Stanton so I could make the point that it's weird for me to cheer for him because of what high school he went to. I'm glad that you're behind him. Go Lions.
I'm sick of the Mike McMahon comparison. Are you people serious? Did you ever see Stanton play in college? Against strong and fast Big Ten D's? Come on, I understand the athletic aspect being barely similar (Drew's better at it) but Drew is a leader, McMahon was not. Drew can pass (hasn't done it in his 2 games much but he did a lot of it at MSU...look at the stats, he wasn't just a runner like he gets labeled!
Clewi,
I'd look more for him to start against buffalo than him to play #2 on Saturday. The first string usually goes into the third quarter on the third game of preseason. He might not even get in the game.
The last preseason game they need to completely sit Kitna and give Stanton some reps with the ones. Can you imagine defenses having to cover Calvin and Roy for the extended periods of time that Staton's legs would buy?
Stanton is a real good psychological fit for Detroit.
The senior QB is a tough-as-nails, ethic-oriented mentor; Drew has underdog tenacity written all over him; the scheme depends(somewhat) on QB fearlessness; and Drew wants to be the Local Boy making good, bless him. He is a tough-minded Lions fan who happens to be playing ball here.
That being said, and although he has not just athleticism but grace, we really need to see a long look at his accuracy, particularly under pressure, before he's a lock at #2.
He has great competitive spirit, so I'm sure its only a matter of time before he makes an impact.
This Dizon thing has to do with Killer's opinion of the current strength in the LB corps. I dont entirely disagree that we could have better LBs. We have more guys on the bubble than certain, and that's a concern. Don't be scared, Tom; the ghosts of Old Detroit might just rise up and lend a hand. This team has Old School toughness, and while it would be great to be certain the LBs were ALL finest kind, it wouldn't be as thrilling to see the climb.
DIAMOND YEAR
HalJordan,
Nobody's perfect and you want to sit and pick everybody apart? You can do that with anybody if you're looking for something to be negative about, don't matter who they're.
HalJordan11 -
Your eval on the offense was close, on defense, swing and a miss. How 'bout sp? Coaching Staff?
You’re not in a band and don't have a song and never leave your room. You own a guitar, play to yourself, think you can sing and are in facebook. Just like a million other 20 something’s out there, no different except your more pissed off.
Was that mom calling?
Oh yeah, you learned most of your slams from a few of your contemporaries as they dumped on you.
hey guys
can't listen to the audio at work.. who did Killer infer was on the bubble of being cut?
i hope Stanton gets a harder look the next couple pre-season games, I really want to see him as the #2 QB..
I agree with Freebird- Stanton appears to have potential (and I followed him while he was at State- hopefully he's laid off the bowl since then) and could very well be the QB of the future for the Lions. However we haven't seen him against the second string or first string. We need to see if he can perform at that level before making a final call.
I'm pulling for him and for our Lions. I'll come back with a firsthand report, as I'm going to the game this Saturday against the Browns!
Restore the roar!
drew stanton IMO should compete with kitna for the starter job in 2009. but as of now if i were the coach he would without a doubt be my backup "at least" right now.
i disagree with killer about the LB corps being a weakness. i seen a very cohesive unit flying to the football and making solid tackles.
but i do agree with matt millen, dizon should start right now and move lennon to the outside. regardless of what killer thinks playing MLB is not rocket science.
and if dizon has troubles telling people where to lineup than give that duty to ernie or lennon, you cant tell me either one of them cant do that bacuse their standing 5 feet to either side of dizon.
dizon is a very smart athlete and i see no reason why he wouldnt be better than paris lennon.
the oline is a weak spot though and i want to see us spend some money this offseason to bring in some quality interier lineman.
and i would absolutely LOVE to see us spend either a 1st or 2nd round draft pick on a high quality OG come april.
duke robinson-OG oklahoma
For all those out there who keep complaining that Jordon Dizon is undersized, let me remind you that Mike Singeltary was 6'O and 230lbs. Sam Mills was about the same size but a little smaller. One last name...Zach Thomas.
Shut up and let the man play!!
pit
i am getting on the Stanton 'wagon too, but if the Lions have a good season and get into the playoffs, going to be hard to imagine Stanton replacing Kitna next year at QB.. so many things can change from now to then.. but I think Kitna is likely our QB for this season and next.. 2010 feels like the year for Stanton
he does know how to take advantage of the perks of his job.. click on one of the Lupe links on his website.. pretty smokin' chick.. suckboy i think there is a picture of Drew in a speedo for you too
Pitt78,heres another promblem i have with you,you make remarks about me on the last story then jump up here without reading my replie.that why you get so skrewed up.you never finish what you start.thats why you only dream of haveing your own tatoo parlor but never will have .now go back be a man &read my reply then after tou say how sorry you are which we already no well talk&read my closeings

now you know REALDEAL as you like to call yourself
Tom is your 5-11 prediction like you pre-season prediction against the Bengals?
This team surely has not got worse from last year Tom, worse case sanrio 7-9 again.
If you do the research this team has one of the best secondary's in the NFL. They got so many ball prone hands in the secondary it reminds me of a 9 woman 1 man orgy.
You made the comment that Rod is not pleased with the running game, and I can see where he's not pleased with the depth and expectations of Tatum Bell being unreliable. He's going to be more upset if they don't use Felton correctly or make him the #2 behind Smith all together.
Seriously I'd like to think Rod and Coletto are hiding Felton because they realize he's that good.
First thing is first...let's hope they us Felton and let's hope it's on the 3 and 1's that you're saying we must obtain!
Then let's hope they use Felton in the redzone.
I'm not sure you're cut out to preach Detroit Lions News anymore Tom...maybe you got confused with your 5-11 and were thinking about the 5 TD's Roy will get along side Calvin's 11 TD's every game......lol...jj....but you're obligation to be hard nosed against Detroit is way off tone...the one year you're going to be stubbern is the wrong year buddy.
blucat
see this what i'm talking about when it comes to you, you jump in and defend people who bash the team then you claim to love the lions..whatever
if your post on the last article was an attempt to insult me it was pretty weak. you better eat your wheaties before you call me out.
and what does my tatt shop have to do with anything??? if it goes according to plan thats awsome but i allready do them out of my house so it wouldnt kill me if it didnt happen.
blucat your no match for me so please just stick to football.
I just wish they'd give Stanton some more reps period. They had DanO in the lineup 5 minutes into the 4th quarter. Dan played most of the game. However, if my intuition is correct, if Stanton gets reps and continues to shine, the koolaid fan base could cry quarterback controversy. That wouldn't help anyone. Stanton is clearly a backup until he's had a couple years to develop. That is the old school mentality of Marinelli and it is best for the team. Besides, Kitna looks awesome! Let's hope his few mistakes these past couple years were due to Martz controlling everything. Seems reasonable.
Rod and Coletto would be ignorant not to let Felton run the ball...67TD's is no fluke....if htey didn't draft him to run then they didn't draft him for the right reasons.
probullers
exellent post you march to your own drummer and i mean that in a good way.
i agree our depth at RB is awful, and IMO we should use the leftover cap money to sign a tough runner like najae davenport or maybe even alexander. in fact i'll guarantee right now we'll sign one of the two.
it would be smart to convert felton to RB considering he had all those touchdowns in college but for whatever reason rod wants 18 FBs on the team at all cost.
pitt78,
I love your fanhood dude!
I see Felton as a future Schlesinger, some good analogies there. i kind of see Stanton like Landry and Kitna like Munson, which is not all that bad, landry was the last Pro Bowl QB for the Lions. I like Smith and Felton both starting now and show up #1 on depth chart on lions web page. I think Gosder is close to moving to #1. however, i am not so sure on Dizon, he is getting reps in a game as the #3 MLB, I do not see him moving to SLB or starting at MLB. I think the line up we see this week which will be sims, lennon, lewis is more than likely the starting LB for the Atlanta game. I just do not see Rod making a move this late in the preseason, but maybe I am wrong. I also do not see Dizon doing things better than his peers to justify a move. Do not get me wrong, i like the kid, just not seeing it on tape.
chant with me fellas..

The intangibles work in the Lions favor this year, so I'll average 6.9 up to 7:
Lions win 7 games.
Bet 7-9 or better straight-up and take it to the bank.

thanks buddy: ]
one thing it seems everybody can agree on is we have outstanding depth at LB, however it shakes out i'll be happy because i trust rod's judgement.
but if it were me i'd start dizon this game and see how he does with our best dline soaking up blocks in front of him and make the determination from his performance.
what could it hurt..? if he stinks up the joint he's not ready and lennon should start, but if dizon plays at least "as good" as lennon then go on ahead and move lennon to LOLB.
GO LIONS!!!
Just make sure Stanton knows HOW to Slide and WHEN to slide.
pit78,once again read my post, ive never stood up for wrfetish, just his rights.no i wasnt trying to insult you if i was you would still be whining, once again im a diehard lions fan always have been, always will be.everyone else know it ive never bashed the lion.im like that blind squirrel running around looking for a walnut.

I was only able to watch the 4th quarter today on NFL replay and was quite impressed with Stanton. I said before and I'll say it again, the best thing that happened to Stanton was to be put on IR last year. That allowed him to see the pro game from the sidelines, and for that he seems to be a much more mature and better fit for the quarterback job. I still think if Harrington had been able to see the game from the sidelines for a year, he might still be here.
One guy,two guys, We all have our opinions of the Detroit lions. The only opinion I have, Is sick em lions. Not one, But all of EM. GO LIONSSSSSSSSSSSSS

"Again Tom is trying to compare Gosder to Dizon, Gosder played both righ and left sides in college Dizon has only ever played Middle LB....Tom needs to stop trying to stir up something that doesn't exist."
Dizon played outside linebacker in college, the Lions are actually changing him from his natural position.
I stand by my comment Stanton is too gren and not ready for prime time, but Dan O. has showed nothing in 4 years. Hope Stanton is the 2nd string QB and Kitna stays healthy all year. That will get Stanton ready to compete next year.If he has to come in this year just look for 81.
Will be interesting what kind of practice and preseason game reps Dan-O and Stanton get for the rest of August.
I'd like to see the team give Drew more action earlier in games with better talent around him on offense and against him on defense.
willy
i hate to say it but i agree that joey harrington would've been a good QB if used properly. i still blame alot of his failure on the scheme and WRs we had.
i cant remember how many times i seen a perfectly thrown ball bounce off az hakim's hands and get intercepted.
joey allways got hammered for checking the ball down but there are three things wrong with that..
1. we didnt have a good oline.
2. in the west coast system your taught to get rid of the ball in a hurry.
3. our wideouts besides roy couldnt get open or hang on to the ball.
to this day i still think joey throws one of the prettiest balls in the league.
It's funny how Killer speaks with so much authority and confidence about where the Lions are, what they should do, what is actually going on, etc..
Ludicrous!
Show a little humility, Tom. It would suit you much better!
To rush Stanton along would be a mistake, he should be allowed to develop over what is essentially his rookie year. If Kitna were to get injured, Dan-O should provide enough firepower in addition to this greatly anticipated run game. By all accounts the Leos are at least another year out from contending, and ruining another QB's confidence is not worth it in the short term.
Hey guys, I just moved into a new place and their not going to have my internet up and running for a few days. : ( I'm on my buddies computer right now trying to catch up on what I've missed the last few days. You guys won't be seeing my wonderful posts for a few days. : ) I know you haters will be real sad about this! Pitt, willy, baloo and other true Lions fans on mlive, keep these haters in line! njlions21,
According to wikipedia, dizon played MLB not OLB. He also hunted wild boar in Hawaii with only a knife and consistently shoots under 80 in golf, that this is impressive. I like this guy more now. however he played MLB in college not OLB.

Dumb A** Hal:
MLB: Jordan Dizon* disgustingly undersized (6’0”, 225) but looked good against college players at Colorado. Why the Lions drafted a safety to play MLB beats the living s*** out of me.
You mean like the bears did moving Urlacher (also in the tampa 2 defense)
well i guess your right, that doesn't make sense at all.

What happened did the haters come out of the wood works or something? That makes sense, they better talk all the trash they can before the real season starts! Were the REALDEAL guys! I've got that feeling!
Who alls in the detfan79's free draft with me in a couple hours? I'm ready!!!!!!!!
blucat,
Whats your deal dude?
This from a MSU grad: Easy on all the Stanton hype. Love the kid, but he sure doesn't run like Vick nor will he ever throw like Elway. What he does very well is compete. Give him time, who knows what will happen.
Whoever suggests or implies we have wonderful depth at the linebacker position needs a slap to the helmet. The talent level as a whole on the dfense only merits a label of "functionable". Which is all we can hope for to be competitive and possibly improve not only their statistical position (seeing they were 32nd, a virtual guarantee) but their win total as well. I've been pleased with the improvement in team speed defensively, but it's only preseason.

You know guys, sometimes I don't read the stories first before reading your comments. Some are soooooo priceless! Lmao funny!!! The previous comments on the Felton story were great.
Lions are 4-12 until proven otherwise... They showed "turning the corner" promise last year into 6-2 land and were exposed.
Can't think of a team with six new D starters who went very far.
Hope to be proven wrong but team needs to feel fan skepticism more than blind faith.

Chill out Buddy. Lets all start over. We all want one thing. Championship. Forget about the past. Nothing good there. Look forward. It will be good.
Just think how much farther along he would be if not for some dumba$$ who put him on IR last year.
wallnoclaw
4-12 is light I think. The offense has been together for a couple years with the exception of Gosder. They look well oiled and on time in the passing game and even though the running game is a work in progress they are going to stick to it. I think they will improve there. On defense, they may be new to each other but the free agents know what to do. The kids are learning but are flying to the ball. If they have a weakness I think it will be the run between the tackles. I think this team can win at least 8 and if the special teams can get us a win or two maybe 9 or 10.
all I have to say today is that I am a proud season ticket holder who is ready for the season to start. those of you who did not renew can enjoy your couches. maybe you have a trained wife who offers trips to the fridge for coldies.
GO Lions.
I really like what I have seen from Stanton so far and he is only going to get better but I dont think he is going to get the job until 2010.
Kitna is probably has 2 good years left in him and Stanton will be a solid #2 next year. The last thing we need to do is rush him like we did Joey.
Part of me wants Stanton to do kind of bad the next two games just because the last thing we need is a QB debate.
I dont want people chanting Stantons name in the stands everytime Kitna throws a pick this year, Drew's time will come but I dont think the average fan understands that.
willy410,your right man thats for the cool down,

Back again huh?... I think you should have a blog with all that in depth analysis... You litterally only listed the worst things you could think about our whole defense... deveries is a good player for 20 plays a game you will see avrill come in and get sacks.
You label everyone who has come here from tampa as washed up. Come on did you see brian kelly punk chad johnson all game.no i look at it this way....
Jared devries- effective defensive end when given a chance has always been an over achiever good against the run average against the pass.
Chuck Darby- great leverage and plays hard every play(which granted might only be 20 max a game)a classic over achiever his whole career played in two superbowls as a starter. Over achieving winner with great attitude replacing a fat under achieving loser.
Dwayne White - The best defensive end on our team. Absolutely relentless with 100% effort on everyplay. What he lacks in athletic ability he makes up for with effort and perfect technique ( really i watched the game film again and really watched him, his get off, pad level, and second move is a training video) overachiever
Paris lennon - had a weak game two could have
lions looking to replace him in the middle to put him on the SS. Undrafted player who played 5 seasons with green bay.. Over achieving linebacker
Ernie Sims- Outstanding talent sideline to side line pro bowl player...Nough said
Dizon- Jury is still out where he lacks in size he makes up for with instincs and tenacity
Brian Kelley - 32 has won a superbowl knows how to play and how to win. Marinelli disciple brings experience and great ball skills
the defensive backfield will be good this year over 20 picks for the group.....
you are a crappy poster all that time invested to be a "realist". I thought you were a 49ers fan now go have fun with martz
10-6
I just read that Cleveland traded with Miami for CB Travis Daniels for a conditional pick. Does this mean they screwed up by trading Bodden to us?
I like that roster rgriffs. I like 4rb and 4 wr. I aslo agree the most worthless player on our team is Cody ( that he should be cut i think he is worthlesss)
I would love to keep Blue i just think they are going to keep the 5th CB in ramzee over blue hope i'm wrong though
lioncrazy
That is exactly what that means... praying the lions don't whoop on them saturday... They would hate to see the lions get the best out of that trade. The browns would have there own version WRFETISH going i told you so bodden was our best corner and now we can't stop the pass. And Rodgers is fat and lazy period give me a guy that wants to work hard every play over a guy who could be one of the greats with 80%effort

Lions are 4-12 until proven otherwise... They showed "turning the corner" promise last year into 6-2 land and were exposed.
Can't think of a team with six new D starters who went very far.
Hope to be proven wrong but team needs to feel fan skepticism more than blind faith.
** Actually the Lions are a 7-9 team until proven otherwise moron. Get a Clue...how can you call them less then what they're or predict they're less then what they are when they obviously improved because it was not possible for them to get worse.
What's 2+2?
johnson81,
I'm an MSU grad and think that Stanton has a very good chance of being the franchise QB Millen & co. were trying to draft.
But...I am with you 100% with respect to fans turning on Kitna at the first sign of trouble and chanting for Stanton - or Orlovsky for that matter. If the fans in Ford Field want a winner, they have to learn to stay out of the quarterbacks head during the game. The papers will write what they're gonna write and people can come here to complain all they want, but to deny the team they supposedly love the benefit of home field advantage is ludicrous.
I haven't been to a ton of games (only one in Ford Field), but the "fans" are sometimes making more noise when the Lions are on offense than when they are on defense which is idiotic. Then they get louder with the boos after they cause a false start because someone couldn't hear the snap count.
It is easy to understand the frustration of the fans considering the years of futility and the price of admission to games, but I wish they were better able to see the big picture and get the other team to false start. The Lions have been bad, but many fans have contributed to the difficulties getting a losing franchise turned around.
Hopefully the Lions will play well-enough this year to keep the fans on their side and make this a moot point, but still...
If you go to a game, don't be a dummy! No team makes the playoffs with effectively 16 road games.
BTW - I do hope Stanton does well enough to become the #2 because I think increased reps is what he needs most and the #3 doesn't get squat once the season begins. If Kitna goes down, I want his backup to be ready - and preferably have only one left foot.

** Is it not about time the fans actually get what they want in Detroit? I think if Stanton shows promise in the nex two pre-season games like he's shown in the last two then he deserves the backup role! I also think if he shows a promising in camp next year and progression in the pre-season games that he should take the reins over Kitna! Kitna should then sit on the bench and gives us a reliable backup QB...that's the way you do it...why obligate to screw yourself over? If Stanton's not the guy next season and shows progression then obviously we need to get someone in here before we don't have Kitna to lean on anymore.....we do what's best for the team not Kitna or any other individual.
Lioncrazy,
"Does this mean they screwed up by trading Bodden to us?"
Whether or not they realize it yet, they did.
There is a restaurant near my work that has Garbage Burger. In addition to a large beef patty, it has ham, bacon, and 3 kinds of cheese.
Cleveland traded Bodden and a draft pick to us for a Garbage Burger. Damn good, but it'll kill ya.
lionsunblock,
"Stanton appears to have potential (and I followed him while he was at State- hopefully he's laid off the bowl since then)"
Aren't you confusing Stanton with Jeff Smoker? Smoker had to take a little hiatus, but I don't remember Stanton having any problems like that.
Watch for number 24 this week against the browns. Eric Wright. He is the guy that replaced Bodden. First he had a 53 yard pass interference call on him because moss beat him out cold. then he was covering hixon when he score the fiorst 2 TDs. On the second one Wright tripped on the goal line as hixon made the catch. Manning picked on him for the first two series. And he looked absolutely horrible.
Either Roy or CJ will be lined up against this 5'10" 195 CB and have a field day. The other guy #22 is even worse.
Do you think they were wise for letting him go? Do you think our Dline is worse in relationship to what they have on their secondary? Add in that we got Fluellen AND Bodden for Rogers and I would say Cleveland got fleeced!
BTW, Anderson and Lewis are not playing this week. And unless Roger's gets over his "general soreness" he will be out too.
Rogers hasn't even practiced since last Wednesday. Sound familiar?
Also, I heard one news report that said it looked like the Browns were playing to get their whole coaching staff fired.
Thanks for the input. Bodden and Flu are excellent additions.
I watched the Browns-Giants the other night, and it seemed the Browns attitude was all messed up. If this attitude prevails throughout the season, they're in trouble big time. I think they had read too many of their press clippings. I wonder if the punk attitude will be there for the Lions.
Did I see Rogers sporting a Mohawk on the sideline?
Yes, smiling and having a good time. What kinda guy is smiling on the sideline instead of pissed he is not playing especially when your new etam is being humiliated on national TV.
remember last year when he was laughing with the opposition during a stoppage in a game we were losing badly?
I have been lucky enough to block out the particulars, but SRog smiling on the sidelines reminded me of it.
Where is the competitive spirit? SRog doesn't appear to have much.
Week 3 is more time for Kitna. Stanton will get his biggest chance in the final preseason game.
The other good thing with Stanton being on IR, That was less Martz interaction, to screw him up.
Yeah, they got a lot of interceptions last year. But look at what Brian Kelly did vs. Chad Johnson.
And then realize that they upgraded from last year in most ways on defense. Even the Darby for Rogers setup doesn't look terrible on paper because Darby has been to two Super Bowls on teams that had very good defenses.
QUIT
wasting time talking about 3rd string scrubs and talk about the good players!!
Chief,
Are you calling Stanton, the subject of the article and likely heir-apparent to Kitna, a 3rd string scrub? If so, why? If not, what are you talking about?
A few years from now, Stanton to CJohnson will be an ESPN weekly highlight. If I am wrong, my wife will sniff Millens jock strap.
If Kowalski says it, it must be true. I guess Drew Stanton is a future superstar with a huge upside.
Hell, why not throw him in there right now? : )
Same old, same old. Lions' fans are never happier than when they're talking about the beloved third string quarterback...
