Kowalski on WDFN: Lewis likely to start over Dizon
by Philip Zaroo | MLive.com
Friday August 22, 2008, 11:20 AM
Nothing is written in gold as far as the Detroit Lions' linebacking situation, but MLive Lions Insider Tom Kowalski doesn't think rookie Jordon Dizon will be starting when the team the regular season in Atlanta. It's looking more and more like Paris Lenon will start in the middle and five-year veteran Alex Lewis will man the strong side.
"They said all along, 'We're going to start our three best linebackers,'" Kowalski tells Matt Shepherd on WDFN's The Morning Show. "It appears that Dizon might not be one of those guys.
"So this is going to get very interesting in the next few games to see how all that falls out because I believe now that they are leaning more toward keeping seven (linebackers) because I think they want Leon Joe to be that backup strong-side guy. But it's getting very interesting there."
Listen to the whole interview to hear why cornerback Leigh Bodden isn't starting right now:

Does that mean
Sims; Cannon/Gardner
Paris(for now); Dizon; Davis
Lewis; Joe
This is getting really speculative without having seen tomorrow's game.
I haven't heard anyone say much good about Alex Lewis, but I like the guy. He can come up with big plays at times. The only drawback with Lewis is I swear he must have gone to MSU before he went to Wisconsin because he does have some china doll in him.
Bodden not a starter yet....???? Anyone listen to the audio, because this doesn't make sense to me, unless it is just Marinelli waiting 'til the start of the season as per usual...
Either all this is a bigsmoke screen or, once again, the Lions braintrust is all f-ed up. Having to start Alex Lewis actually is a step backwards... we didn't improve athletically or smarts wise excpt through ther draft. Havig Lewis as a starter? Lewis sucked last year and (unless he's Popeye and eating tons of spinach) he'll suck again this year.
I'm concerned about Dizon. Seems to me he's got to get his head out of his azz and start taking the Lions seriously.
Dizon's agent induced hold out at the start of camp seems to be working against him and, more importantly, the team. The secrecy over his drunk driving, his training camp holdout and now the crap about not learning his position... sort makes you wonder.
ussually i agree with what killer has to say but not this time. to me the LB corps has looked very good and i really dont see that unit as a weakness.
now i'm going to vent...
WTF why are we going into games only dressing seven olinemen, and why the hell are we keeping four TEs at the expense of oline depth???
when is this team going to understand that the offense lives and dies with the play on the offensive line???
here are a list of my concerns, feel free to answer or comment...
1. why isnt leigh bodden starting this week? this is the week where the starters play an entire half, so shouldnt bodden be starting with the first team? fischer sucks!
2.why does everything boil down to if a player can contribute on special teams? we got rid of eddie drummond, a good KR because he couldnt play two or more positions and now were stuck with aveon frikin cason..? just because a guy can multitask doesnt mean he can play two positions well..
3. what is it with coach rod and paris lennon??? please here this out...
lennon had ZERO expierience in the tampa 2 before coming here, in fact he was stocking shelves at the local supermarket when we picked him up.
so why is it that he waltz's into the starting MLB job, but jordon dizon has tremendous potentail and he's being shelved???
4. why arent they stopping guys from hiting the QB during practice, the fact that stanton got hurt in practice is asinine!
5. why isnt kennith moore getting more opportunitiess at returning kicks/punts?
we passed on ali highsmith for this guy, and ali highsmith coulve solidified the LOLB spot for the next 8-10 years?????
6. why arent we spending our remaining cap space on a position of need RB/QB/LB??? WTF
sorry for sounding like wrfetish guys but damn..
Regarding the backup center... is there some rule that the long snapper can't be a backup center?
Pitt,
I hear ya loud and clear bro! Great points! I'd love to see Moore get more opportunities, why did we draft him if were not even going to give the boy a chance to prove what he's made of?!? I also was on the Highsmith bandwagon, he's going to be a beast! I have questions too but I also have faith in Rod. I think Millen is not off in the shadows as we thought, I think he's still trying to pull his power card. I really don't think him and Rod see eye to eye and I hope this means Millen getting the hell outta here and Rod staying. I really hope if we get a new GM he will keep Rod, I doubt it but I hope this is how it will play out.
Pit,
The only thing I disagree with is where you said they need to stop letting them hit the qb. I'm sure he wasn't hit, I'll bet it was peterman getting pushed into the backfield and Stanton hit him when he was throwing the ball. Otherwise, Everthing else was spot on.
Pit
1. Bodden is not quite up to speed, but will likely excel soon enough. The Nickel will be on the field to the extent that they might as well be a Starter. He may be CB2 by the (early)Bye anyway.
2. I agree about ST contributions possibly having to much emphasis(Gardner, Pearson) but Cason is also a great locker-room guy, and a good mentor.
3. I dont know about Lenon. He has heart, he has Brain, but he doesn't really have production other than what could be expected considering last year's Offense. He doesn't look like a Playmaker.
4. I agree. That red on the jersey should come off on Defenders- a smudge of stupidity.
5. I hope we see Moore get a better look against the Browns. I think the Bengals game was about being sure on Cason.
6. A FA at RB, G, or LB would be nice. The amount of money available after this year is alarming too. Detroit is getting into a position of having a much larger variety of choices in many areas than I can remember since Fontes. Maybe Millen is waiting for a definitive 'state of the Team' from Marinelli before he gets out the checkbook.
I dont think you sound negative. All that stuff is totally valid. Teams in a rebuild have so many growing pains that we get anxious for results. Still another week of Coaching the current personnel, too, so we'll see.
GO LIONS
Are you guys even listening? Bodden's the starter, but Marinelli doesn't like to insert people with the 1st O or D until they've "earned" it. But he's the starter.

: ] welcome back bro, and thanks for being the voice of reason. if millen does get canned coach rod will stay because WCF's son loves coach rod.
tommarrows game should answer aolt of my questions but i'd be lying if i said i wasnt a little concerned.
whylionswhy
lol your probably right, peterman isnt as good as i hoped he would be. i wouldnt count out us getting some oline help with our remaining cap, allthough unlikely..
GO LIONS!!!
Pit,
seriously I could not have said it better myself...I'm confused about a lot things.
Do you guys know how to change your name? I need a new handle.
Do you think they'll keep Tatum Bell? I think they should keep Smith, Pinner, Cason and put Calhoun on the Practice Squad. Bell needs to take his poor attitude and play elsewhere.
torgoman
bodden IS NOT the starter until he starts!
i hope he starts against atlanta!

just go down by the login spot and go to register and create a new account.: ]
yes bell should be fired if he sucks again this week. then we can sign najae davenport so he can crap in millen's office, just like he crapped in that chick's hamper. ROFL!
GO LIONS!!!
Pit,
Thanks for the welcome back man! I've been going through mlive withdraws! lol
Guys I can't wait til tomorrow! I know the games on NFL network live but I don't get it here. Do any of you know where I can watch it online? justintv.com etc.? I've gotta see this game! I'd love to see us block the shiznet out of Rogers and maybe hold him down and shave his stupid mohawk. lol I also want to see what Brady Quinn can do against our great DB's. I really liked that guy in college and I wish we could have got him but oh well, I like Stanton a lot. Does anyone know what the status of Dereck Anderson is? I've got him on my big money fantasy league and I'm not sure if I should add Quinn or not as insurance.
click
i'm pretty sure anderson is starting tommarrow but i havent heard anything.
in the regular season i think we could beat the browns but since its going to be brady quinn VS dan o in the second half i think we'll get our first preseason loss tommarrow. [i hope not though]..
does rogers really have a mohawk now..? LMAO: ]
Anderson's concussion is mild, but they say he might not be back until the opener.
schmidtfan
COOL!!!
if quinn only plays the first half we'll have a legitimate shot of winning tommarrow.
that is GREAT news!
click
in your league preseason doesnt count right?
I just found this on espn fantasy news. Quinn is starting against us tomorrow.
Fri, Aug 22 Coach Romeo Crennel said if Anderson is cleared to return to practice, he may play in the Browns' preseason finale on Aug. 28, the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.
Recommendation: We doubt the Browns will veer away from the cautious route here, but Anderson's concussion was said to be mild, so a brief appearance in the finale is at least plausible.
Pitt,
Also yes Rogers has a mohawk now, I saw it in the Browns last preseason game. He looks like an idiot! I like mohawks but Rogers looks very queer with his.
pitt,
No preseason doesnt count but if Quinn plays well Anderson's job could be in jeopardy. Anderson looked terrible in that last preseason game! It had a lot to do with the Browns offensive line though, they look terrible. We should get plenty of sacks against them tomorrow.
Pit
I have no idea why we would only dress 7 Linemen. That seems counter-intuitive to givng as many reps as possible, even if the scrubs have already been determined.
I think the idea of keeping Owens over McHugh is nuts. As far as keeping Owens over a 10th O-Lineman...pardon my language, but thats comparing crap to crap.(I hope I'm wrong)
I really hope we draft a G early next year. Dom is the only consistent element inside, and needs help.
whylionswhy, THANK YOU!! I thought I was the only one to see Petermans ineptness.
We just signed Drew Henson (Michigan boy) guys. Thoughts?????????
Drew Henson...
A college drop-out ex-Yankee NFLE alum...
At least he's tall.
But seriously, he wants back in badly, he's a natural athlete, but has never shown focus(I detest agreeing with Tuna.) This really is his last big shot, I suppose. Not to be overly dramatic, but if he gets a chance; he might light it up for about a biscuit. Good luck, Drew Two.
GO LIONS
IST ZER GUT
0talent,
I would'nt expect you to know anything about a good Michigan QB. You don't know a thing about football as it is.
What do we have to lose? He's CHEAP and he's out to prove something. He probably will get cut before the season starts but who knows, he could be a diamond in the rough.
It's a shame that Henson didn't stick with football. He would've been the number one QB if not the #1 player overall in the draft had he not decided to go play baseball. He had alot of talent, but the time away from the sport pretty much ruined his chances of ever sticking and making any kind of impact with an NFL team.
I dont think the coaches want anyone to have any idea who will start until gametime week 1.
