THE DOG HOUSE - Beer has come to the dogs.

Bowser beer, a non-carbonated, non-alcoholic beer for dogs (hops can cause seizures in dogs and the alcohol can lead to other health complications), comes in two flavors, Beefy Brown Ale and Cock-a-Doodle Brew.

"Dog owners tend to want to treat their beloved pets as another human being. ... Now as owners pop a cold brew, they're dogs can too," said Jennifer Brown, creator of Bowser Beer.

Bell's Brewery Inc. questioning whether or not to hold annual Eccentric Day

    by KalamaBrew Staff
    Wednesday November 12, 2008, 5:30 PM

Bell's Brewery Inc. president Larry Bell is Eccentric Day garb prior to the 2006 bash.
KALAMAZOO -- Bell's Brewery Inc.'s annual Eccentric Day may have gotten a little too big, and wild, for its brightly-colored britches.

Bell's president Larry Bell said the December event, which has been featured in USA Today as one of the "10 Great Places for Holiday Cheer," was "out of control" last year and he's not sure if he'll host the party at the Eccentric Cafe, 355 E. Kalamazoo Ave., next month.

"It's a question of whether or not we can pull it off," Larry Bell said Tuesday. "It was kind of a disaster last year. People trashed the place. ... I'm not going through that again."

Eccentric Day started in 1991 as a celebration of Eccentric Ale, a specialty seasonal brew. It also featured entertainment and eccentric food. In order to get into the daylong party, patrons had to elaborately dress up. But as Eccentric Day gained popularity, trouble has followed. Bell said it took weeks to clean up after last year.

Bell said he expected to "make a decision in the next few days," but said people will have to check the brewery's Web site for updates.
