VanOchten: Lions stuck looking for next Marinelli
by
The Grand Rapids Press Monday January 05, 2009, 11:00 PM
Grand Rapids Press columnist Brian VanOchten joined Bill Simonson inside the "GR Press Box" to talk about the latest in the Detroit Lions' search for a new coach.
"This is not an attractive job at all. It's got to be someone who's desperate to be a head coach, who just wants that shot," VanOchten said. "I hate to say it, but they're going to be looking for a few Rod Marinellis out there to come in, be the stop-gap. It's the same old thing with the Lions."

Beardsley: U-M a contender in wide-open Big Ten
by The Grand Rapids Press Monday January 05, 2009, 10:45 PM
Grand Rapids Press columnist Howie Beardsley joined Bill Simonson inside the "GR Press Box" to talk about the latest with the Michigan and Michigan State basketball teams, which opened Big Ten play last week.
"It's really becoming fun to watch this Michigan basketball team. They're young, they're aggressive," Beardsley said. "(Laval) Lucas-Perry is a huge addition to go with Manny Harris and DeShawn Sims. These kids are starting to mature and show leadership, and they've bought in to (coach John) Beilein's system."

2008: Year in Review
by Dan Hawkins | The Grand Rapids Press Sunday December 28, 2008, 12:15 AM
Detroit Red Wings center Kris Draper (33) holds up the Stanley Cup after the Red Wings defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins 3-2 in Game 6. Download The Press' Year in Review page with top headlines and a news quiz (PDF)Eight was the record number for American swimmer Michael Phelps in the Beijing Olympics, and it also served West Michigan well. High school football teams from "outstate" swept all eight state titles.
For Michigan's NFL squad, the 2008 season was doubly bad (think 16). They appeared all but certain to set the league mark for futility by finishing at Green Bay today with a winless record.
Not that we lacked for champs. The Red Wings took their 11th Stanley Cup, and five-time boxing titleist Floyd Mayweather was eyeing a return to the ring.
Michael Phelps' Olympic record: Was it Mark Spitz? Was it seven medals? Nope. Michael Phelps won all eight of his races -- one by a minuscule fraction of a second and the last while he watched a heroic teammate bring home the win -- to set the gold standard for world-class swimmers. Despite a grueling schedule, he made most of it look easy, and was easygoing too. There's a reason he has a million friends on Facebook.

VanOchten: Ford should be on field for Lions' 0-16
by The Grand Rapids Press Friday December 12, 2008, 11:00 PM
Grand Rapids Press columnist Brian VanOchten joined Bill Simonson on "The Huge Show" to talk about the winless Detroit Lions and their upcoming game against the Indianapolis Colts and the prospect of the team going 0-16.
"I would love to see (Lions owner William Clay Ford) front and center, get him on a plane, get him to Green Bay (for the last regular-season game) and make him stand there and be on national television for the complete shame and embarrassment his franchise has become," VanOchten said. "He should have to go down there for the coin flip. That'd be great television."

by The Grand Rapids Press Monday December 08, 2008, 8:30 PM
Grand Rapids Press columnist Howie Beardsley joined Bill Simonson inside the "GR Press Box" to talk about Michigan's upset victory over Duke at Crisler Arena on Saturday.
"I don't think kids bought in last year (to coach John Beilein's system) because they weren't seeing results," Beardsley said. "What I like about Michigan is with so many graduation losses and early exits to the NBA, I think the Big Ten title is totally up for grabs. If Michigan can continue to play like this, they're right in the mix."
